Background and development of the Population Policy
Tasmania’s Population Policy (PDF 4.8 MB) is an update of the Population Growth Strategy (the strategy). In 2015, the strategy set a target to grow the population to 650,000 people by 2050 to drive economic growth, create jobs and improve the standard of living for all Tasmanians.
Since then, Tasmania has had periods of increased population growth, which has resulted in many opportunities including a stronger economy and more people in jobs, however it has also brought some growing pains. These challenges have led to refreshing the strategy through the new Population Policy.

Report: Toward Infill Housing Development
Infill housing has the potential to improve housing choice, accessibility and affordability. In 2019, the Department of State Growth engaged Place Design Group to provide advice on infill housing development opportunities in Tasmania’s key urban centres.

Consultation on the development of Tasmania’s Population Policy
From 19 January to 5 March 2023, the Department of State Growth led a public consultation process on the Refreshing Tasmania’s Population Strategy Consultation Paper. The department conducted over 45 hours of dialogue with stakeholders and received 77 written submissions. This consultation has helped to inform the new Population Policy (PDF 4.8 MB)
