We’re improving the University of Tasmania (UTAS) Stadium in Launceston, an iconic precinct that has been hosting great sporting events since 1921.

This transformation will attract national sporting and entertainment events to Launceston, supporting the City of Launceston’s vision to make the city a premier business, retail and lifestyle hub.

The Tasmanian Government has committed $65 million to Stage 1 of a $200 million transformation which will deliver a contemporary facility in the heart of Launceston, securing Tasmania’s sporting future.

The Stage 1 redevelopment will be influenced by the Australian Tier 2 Level stadium requirements and will include:

  • a brand-new eastern stand, replacing the existing eastern terrace
  • pre-match entertainment precinct with a new south-east entry plaza
  • enhanced experience for fans and audiences including increased seating capacity
  • new food and beverage outlets and patron amenities servicing the eastern side
  • improved matchday facilities for athletes and officials on the western side of the ground.

On April 28, 2023, the Australian Government announced the commitment of an additional $65 million to undertake Stage 2 of the UTAS Stadium redevelopment, matching the Tasmanian Government’s commitment.

The matched contribution from the Australian Government provides a total of $130 million in funding for upgrades at the stadium, enabling Stage 1 and Stage 2 to be completed.

A Stage 2 works program will now be planned in consultation with key stakeholders.

The ultimate completion of Stage 1 and 2 works will bring more elite sporting and entertainment events to Tasmania’s north and provide support to a future Tasmanian AFL Team. It will also generate broader community and economic benefits to the region.
