Frequently asked questions

Northern Suburbs Community Recreation Hub (the Hub)

What are the project benefits?

The Northern Suburbs Community Recreation Hub (the Hub) will re develop the site at 316-320 Invermay Road Mowbray, to create a purpose-built community recreation space that provides facilities for multiple indoor and outdoor sports.

The Hub will help to address a critical shortage of indoor sporting facilities in Launceston and to improve access to local community, sport and recreation infrastructure and programs in Launceston’s Northern Suburbs.

With approximately 10,000 square metres of usable indoor space and additional outdoor space the Hub will include:

  • Indoor multi-purpose courts for netball, basketball, volleyball, and other sports to address the current shortfall.
  • Rock climbing, boxing and weightlifting facilities including an outdoor activities area
  • A designated gymnastics area to provide a wide range of programs for toddlers, young people, and adults
  • Café and spectator amenities (grandstand seating) with change room facilities and onsite parking
  • Opportunities for the whole community to come together in a positive space offering diverse services and opportunities.

How will the work affect you?

The Hub will be delivered in two stages.

Stage 1 – We will be clearing the site, including the demolition of some onsite structures, and providing site services, in mid-2023 to get ready for building.

Stage 2 – We will start building the Hub in early 2024 and be finished in mid-2025.

Will the works be noisy or dusty?

While we are clearing up the site, we will be using machinery that does make some noise, we will limit noisy activities in line with the Development Application approved by City of Launceston to minimise disruption to the surrounding residents, businesses, and the nearby Mowbray Primary School.  The works will create some dust, but we will make every effort to keep it to a minimum.

Is the site contaminated?

There is some isolated low-level contaminated soil at the site. The soil can be treated to make the site safe for construction and future use.  We will be treating the soil on site, in-line with the Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) guidelines and supported by a detailed Remediation Action Plan (RAP). There is no danger to the community or nearby properties and residents.
