Become a Farm Debt Mediator

Applications are open to become an accredited mediator under the Farm Debt Mediation Act 2024 (FDM Act).

Accreditation will be valid for two (2) years, following which a reaccreditation process must be completed remain accredited under the FDM Act. An accredited mediator may advise the Commissioner at any time if they no longer wish to be an accredited mediator.

Capabilities and experience

The Commissioner requires accredited mediators under the Farm Debt Mediation Scheme to:

  • Maintain accreditation under the National Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS) from a Recognised Mediator Accreditation Body.*
  • Maintain accreditation under the Australian Mediator and Dispute Resolution Accreditation Standards (AMDRAS) from a Recognised Accreditation Provider.*

*July 1 2024 marks the start of the transition period from the NMAS to AMDRAS. The NMAS will remain in effect until 30 June 2025.

The Commissioner is most interested in applications from mediators who have an affinity, knowledge or practical experience in relation to:

  • Farm debt mediation
  • Primary production
  • Farm business management
  • Banking
  • Finance

Applicants should ensure they highlight any such experience in the Application form and are advised to nominate a referee who can speak to the work of the applicant in these content areas.

Brief description of the resolution process

The Farm Debt Mediation Commissioner (the Commissioner) maintains a list of individuals suitably qualified to provide dispute resolution of matters relating to farm debt issues. Resolution of matters by agreement is consistent with Part 5 of the FDM Act which provides that the function of mediators is to resolve, or attempt to resolve, by mediation matters relating to the present arrangements and future conduct of financial relations between a farmer and a creditor involving a farm debt.

Inclusion on the list

The selection of the mediator on the list does not create a contract between the mediator and the Department of State Growth.

All applications will be acknowledged but not all applicants will necessarily be included on the list of accredited mediators. Assessment and selection of appropriately qualified people for inclusion is entirely at the discretion of the Commissioner.

The information provided in your application will be kept in-confidence; however if included on the list, your name and details will be published on the Department of State Growth’s website.
